TokyoNinjaRadioStation

November 19th, 2006

tokyo-ninjaNot only the name is phantastic, also the tunes played on www.tokyo-ninja.com are great. According their own description they play music for all ROCKABILLY CATS in the world. Because of my somehow limited japanese, I have no clue who or what is behind the station, but it doesn’t matter, the played music is in no way releated to island in the far east.

A few years ago it switched it on, just on because of the funny name and I never regret. In the past this station was an insiders’ tip, but now I esteem it as standard in its sector.

The ninjas stream a mixture of rockabilly, neorockabilly, psychobilly, horror punk, garage, swing, funk neoswing, speed country, americana, … okay mainly it is somehow rock-/psychobilly, but they don’t stick in this genre .
The common denominator of the songs, populating their playlist, is that they are full of energy and fun. It is the collection of music you need to shake your legs …

Stream is mp3 @ 128kbit, metadata is supplied, but intervall dosen’t fit 100% to song changes, therefore the stream is not usefull for recording single songs.
Let’s rock! It’s hot!

SomaFM

SomaFM

It all began because there was nothing good to listen to on the radio… not too hard to understand, turn on your radio & you’ll be directly annoyed by adult contemporary formats. Playing all these boring top-40 whole day long. airplays mostly consists of less title, than an average teenager carries with his ipod! Every few minutes “Die besten Hits der 80iger, 90iger und jetzt!!!”, it seems that the AC-radios have to mention it so often, because you will not realize it by listening. Not worth to mentioned the commercials ….

So free you from this annoyance and listem to nice internet streaming stations!
SomaFM describes itselts as a listener supported, commercial free internet radio station. In general you will find at least one of its channel, in shoutcast most listened directory. As of writing SomaFM offers still 10 channels (they had to close some cause of DMCA CARP ruling). But in opposite to many other nice stations they survived the efforts of RIAA

Channels are:
Groove Salad, Secret Agent, indie pop rocks, Space Station Soma, Illinois Street Lounge, Beat Blender, cliqhop idm, Drone Zone, Boot Liquor, Doomed, Tag’s Trance Trip, Xmas in Frisko (only inx-mas season)

Groove Salad on SomaFM, independent, alternative/undeground internet radio
The most popular stream seems to be Groove Salad, a nicely chilled plate of ambient beats and grooves. The style is a kind of ambient, cill out, easy listenig, most songs are instrumental. Good electronica for surfing. Check out their playlist.

Secret Agent on SomaFM, independent, alternative/undeground internet radio
Nethertheless, my favorite is Secret Agent, the soundtrack for your stylish, mysterious, dangerous life. For Spies and PIs too! Allthough my life is probably common, boring and shiftless, I really enjoy this sound. Secret Agent offers you a kind of (smooth) jazz, downtempo lounge music enriched with snipplets and soundtracks from spy movies. The music keeps you releaxed and let you enjoy your cocktail. Most recent songs can be found in current playlist.

SomaFm streams in various formats, so that you are not stuck to any specific player (you have the freedom of choice). Actually they have an 3GPP stream, which is handy for cell phones ;-) .

Formats they use: MP3, aacPlus, 3GPPand WMA. Also the bandwith varies, you can choose from 24k up to 128k. Furthermore I never notice any drop-outs while listening.

Unforunately sometimes not all songs are proper tagged and sometimes crossfading is used (at least this is my experiance with Secret Agent). So it is not perfect, but usable for recording via streamripping.

enough блабла — turn on you favorite media player and switch to: http://somafm.com/secretagent.pls

Ooops I forgot to mention that SomaFM has also a podcast:

Stay tuned or streamed

Realy nice streaming radio!!!

Played music: Musiques de la Caraïbe, (Kreyol) Dancehall, Zouk, Soca, HipHop, RnB, Soul and of course Reggae. All in all it is nice mixture of contemporary carribian sounds. The stream is quite reliable in good quality (128k, mp3) using clean meta data (makes it suitable for ripping). Only drawback: homepage is french (not my preferred language)
